Christ and Sinner

Although all but Jesus are sinners in this picture, the one the title refers to is Mary Magdalene. In purple, right next to her cup of spilled win, she has been living a luxuriant life of the flesh, surrounded by wine and song and men who lavish her with jewelry. But the quiet Jesus, who is the light, who is the way, and who has said nothing yet, has already called her to her conscience just by his presence.

The young apostle John looks on at the Master, concerned about what he will do in this house of sin. But we know what he will do. He will call sinners to repent and be forgiven, to receive his love ad mercy. Mary looks the most convicted, but clearly many in the shadows recognize their sinfulness and hopefully their need for salvation.

Henryk Hektor Siemiradzki (Henry Semiradsky, 1843-1902) was a Polish Catholic painter who achieved a lot of success as an artist in the 19th Century. Known best for huge scenes from the Bible or Greco-Roman times, he painted in what was called the academic style, which means a beautiful but carefully constructed realism. In addition to this picture, we carry his "Woman at the Well" and "Jesus with Martha and Mary."
